那我想這是不可避免的就是關係嘛ho. 人際關係呀它很重要。當然做人際關係就要有其他的不尋常的關係,那麼就那就很難講。那在臺灣裏面象也非常的重視這件事情就是關係ho。那當然你的能力也是很重要ho。那但是一開始的時候人家不知道你的能力是什麼東西,所以說哦通常一些比較哦比如說剛畢業的這個哦年輕人那,那可能在找事情上面說實際上有時候會常遇上一些挫折,但是透過些關係等等啊就比較容易找到。 那同樣的像以我個人為例的話,那我們在一個比較屬於就是找人的這個角色上面呢ho,扮這種角色。 那我們找這個角色的時候,比如說舉一個比較簡單的例子,我們可能哦從104人力銀行*裏面找人的時候,發覺說ei裏面有些人可能你認識的,或者說是裏面有些人那可能是ei跟你是同一個學校的或者說是因為是同一個家鄉的等等啊。那實際上你就比較特別的去關(心)想到,ei, 這些人是不是哦可以來跟你一起呀工作或是一起合作等等。所以說這方面的話是很難免是避免不了的。 那很多的這個我想不管是公司也好,那他們在找人的時候wo, 那一開始的時候是真的不知道對方的能力在哪里,那所以就透過關係那基本上也是想去知道說對方的能力到底是不是足夠ho。那所以這種關係我想它不只是非常負面的說 ei只是只是只是純粹靠單純的關係。而是透過關係去瞭解到對方的能力是不是能夠符合你的需要。那因為這樣關係的話實際上你很容易找到比較需要的人。而且實際上,另外一個是透過這樣的關係可能,當然也有(side effect),不過就是可能就是大家在這個關係上面大家比較能夠維持, 然後能夠得到比較好的後面的一些結果。

I think what you can’t avoid is guanxi [lit: “relationships.” It’s similar to the idea of “having connections.”]. Interpersonal relationships are very important. Of course, when you network, you’re going to have some unusual guanxi; it’s hard to predict. In Taiwan, people really emphasize guanxi. Of course, your abilities are very important, too. But when you’re first starting out, people don’t know anything about your abilities, so they’re usually more, uh, take, for example, a young person who has just graduated from school. Looking for a job, he’s probably, to tell the truth, sometimes he’s going to encounter some frustration. But with guanxi, etc., he’s going to have an easier time finding work. Similarly, take me as an example, we’re in more of a hiring kind of role, we play this kind of role. Now, when we’re seeking this role, take a simpler example…. we probably, when we looked for people from 104 Job Bank*, we discovered there were some people [listed there] that we probably knew, or some that were probably from the same school, or from the same hometown. So, you actually are more interested in them. Uh, [you think,] “Could these people come work with you, or cooperate with you, or something?” So, this kind of thing [guanxi] is hard to avoid, is unavoidable. Now, many, I think companies are the same. When they’re hiring, they don’t know at the start where someone’s abilities lie. So they use guanxi. Basically, they want to know whether someone is qualified. So I think this kind of guanxi isn’t simply something very negative, uh, just, just, just purely a reliance on relationships. Instead, it’s the use of these relationships to understand whether someone’s abilities are sufficient to the job, whether they meet your needs. These relationships in fact enable you to find people who are more like what you’re looking for. Moreover, in fact, this other [the job seeker] is using this kind of guanxi to probably, of course there are side effects, but guanxi is something everybody… with it everybody is more able to get by, and more able to bring about better end results.
