English
Uh, in fact, China has always been a nation that really talks about, really trusts in tradition. Uh, in pre-modern times, when Chinese people did business it was more like everybody just, uh, agreed on something, reached a verbal agreement, and they were bound by it. That became something that, uh, just had to happen. Everybody did things based upon trust. But now, maybe because society is now advanced, people have more complicated philosophies. Maybe sometimes, what you’ve made a verbal agreement with someone about wasn’t written down and therefore isn’t legally binding. In the end, it’s probably you that gets cheated. So nowadays, uh, more and more people say that conversations aren’t binding, that you need to get things written down in black and white, that this is a better way of doing things. But, as far as I know, in fact, um, in some Chinese cities, they still rely on verbal agreements to do deals. Wenzhou, for example. The people there, they even, uh, lending, they rely on only verbal agreements even when lending big money, like more than 10 million. Of course, if one person breaks the agreement, it destroys the friendship and trust [between them]. And other people won’t trust this person. Uh, I think that as society has developed, more and more people have come to rely on the law as a tool to, uh, continue doing business with everybody. For this reason, you have to write things down. I personally favor this approach because I think it lets you rest more easy. Even if you, for example, you buy something, if you have a receipt, you can better get, uh, when you’re rights are infringed upon, you can recoup some of your losses.
