English

Generally, in China when we meet with a foreign customer, we often, uh, if, there’s two kinds of situations. If it were me, I’d choose to use the customer’s native language. Why would I choose to do this? Because if I make this choice, foreign customers, they’re going to feel a kind of intimacy. Like, if you go to the US, if Americans speak Chinese with me, I’ll feel very friendly [towards them]. It’s as if an intimate is speaking with me, not a foreigner, and I’ll feel I’m in my own country. That’s a great feeling. If, instead, they use a second language to talk to me, I’ll feel that there are many language barriers. Moreover, um, if a foreign client doesn’t speak English that well, and I use English to talk to him, then without a doubt there will be some misunderstandings or a language barrier. These language barriers can be large or small. Sometimes they have serious consequences and cause misunderstands between the speakers. So, if I run into that kind of situation, I do my utmost, um, when I’m with a foreign client, to learn his language. Then I use his mother tongue to converse with him. In this way, I get better in a third language. And then I can also give him [a sense of] intimacy, make him comfortable. I think that this creates a better situation for us both. Uh, also, naturally, from another point of view, using English to communicate is also a good option because, uh, for everybody, English is the most widely used language in the world. Now what that means is that when we two are engaged in a conversation, we’re using the language of officialdom to speak. That can make the atmosphere more formal, more solemn. If we were to use a third language, use, uh, his mother tongue, it wouldn’t perhaps have this effect. It would probably feel more casual. If I use English, the feeling, um is more formal, it’s better.
