To us Chinese, Americans are still considered to be fairly realistic. The will often confine themselves to a list of things that they want to get done in the next couple of days, and will have a good schedule. Then they will go about their own daily lives. Of course this schedule of theirs, when compared to what Chinese might do, is a bit more thorough. This is because Chinese people, you could say, their vision is rather long-range. Or you could say they are rather limited by circumstances. They like to have begun a long time in advance when researching a problem that they are facing at present. Americans perhaps feel that it is better to take care of the job at hand, and that’s good enough. Distant matters can be dealt with when the time comes, and we can deal with them one at a time (as they come). The Chinese, however, when they hold a meeting, they feel the need to speak about very long-range issues. For example, they may talk about their plans for the next twenty or thirty years and make a very long-term strategy. This could be a kind of difference between Western and Chinese culture. I think there will always be differences. But Americans are not necessarily only concerned with the next two or three days. It may be a kind of cultural restriction that makes them very realistic, and makes them feel that matters far in the future can be considered in the future…and that’s just fine.
