Uh, there’s been a big change in the use of lawyers in China in the last 10 or 20 years. In the past, most, 100%, I should say nearly all businesses were state-owned. So, when two companies sat down to negotiate, no one thought to have a lawyer sit down with them, sit at the negotiating table. Uh, because they had no purpose. What was the point? No one knew what the point of a lawyer was. They were all state-owned enterprises, so they didn’t need lawyers. It was as if they were all one, uh, one, all one family. Uh, Chinese often say this. So…. But, over the last 10 or 20 years, uh, many, uh, many private enterprises—joint ventures and sole proprietorships—have formed. Consequently, now when these companies sit down together, to, for example, to hold business talks, they want a lawyer with them. Both sides will, will bring lawyers. Uh, throughout the whole negotiation process, [they’re] involved in every detail to guarantee, uh, guarantee that there’s nothing that will create legal problems. Uh, but, basically, Chinese people doing these kinds of things probably will, won’t, won’t involve the lawyers in every single step. [They’ll] probably [bring them in] for some key parts. For example, uh, that is, uh, uh, normally, suppose you two, two companies have already negotiated 90%. You’ve already pretty much agreed on the kind of price and the kind of terms. So, at the end, basically, the last law—at the end, the lawyers enter and at the end take these terms, uh, and write them down in great detail. Uh, so, this, this approach, I think one reason for it is that companies want to keep costs down. Hiring a lawyer in, in China is expensive now.
