English

Government officials, at the most basic level, represent their country. As a result, they usually have a core idea—they represent Taiwan, so they would like Taiwan to be taken seriously. So when you talk to a government, to a Taiwanese government official, it is very important to respect Taiwan’s government. So suppose you can show a little understanding of Taiwanese life and make him feel that you care a little, that you take him seriously. I think this is a great first step when you meet. I think we Taiwanese are basically very polite, very courteous. We’re also willing to talk to people from all walks of life. He’s a government official. He represents the official government position. So in this role it’s very hard for him not to focus on maintaining the government’s prestige. So suppose we… when someone wants to talk to a government official, the more interest he shows in the Taiwanese government, the more concern…. His [sense of] professional duty also affects his [degree of] interest. He’ll think, “This is a good guy, someone [I can] deal with.” So he’ll be willing to help. The second thing is, on a personal level, we, they are very concerned about face. So sometimes giving a… exchange small gifts when you arrive. For example, suppose I’m going to visit some place today. I can bring a bag of chocolate, uh, something small to show my goodwill. But if it goes over a certain value, my gift will probably have a different effect. That’s the second point. The third point is suppose you can target the guy’s interest. I think this is probably helpful in many nations. We Taiwanese generally have some interest in drinking tea, in fengshui, or whatever. If you can talk a little about these topics everybody’s interested in, or if you already know that this person is interested in art, or collects something, and you talk about this a little, [talk] a little about these things you both are interested in, I’m sure it will help. Fourth, if you can help this government official with his work, if he, you understand it and can give him an idea to think over, I think it can help you build a closer relationship. That’s my opinion. Thanks.
