English

Um, actually, in China, uh, drinking is a tradition and a kind of courtesy. So, if you are going out to participate in some event, especially within China, there’s going to be a lot, uh, in, uh, a lot of things are dealt with at the dinner table. So, if you can’t hold your liquor, it might be a big problem. But I think, uh, there’s some skill involved [in avoiding drinking]. For example, uh, you can tell someone, “What a shame, I’m driving.” Drivers, these days, in China too, drivers can’t drink any liquor at all. So you say, “Uh, if I drink, then I probably won’t be able to drive home.” Now, most people will understand this. But there still [might be] a problem because more than one person has driven. So [they] might say, “Uh, then I’ll ask this or that person to drive you home today. Now drink a little something. You can’t go home sober!” Now, in this situation, you have to know how to dodge. For example, when someone wants to drink a toast with you, don’t drink the whole glass. There’s a little skill involved here. For example, drink, drink half a swallow, or, or toast another person. Don’t just sit there waiting for people to toast you. [If] you, you sit there like an idiot, if you do that, I guarantee you’re going to get drunk. My father didn’t used to drink and used to have to go out. But he slowly learned some ways [to avoid drinking]. So, before you go out to eat, you first have to think hard about how to reasonably avoid drinking, and those people making toasts.
