I think there is a tendency that emphasizes one’s alma mater or academic background at large corporations or public offices even though it is not the case at the office where I work. When getting a job, the academic background, for example, such things like one's acquired degrees or major fields etc. are, needless to say, very important in the U.S. as well. However, so-called academic background in Japan is not limited to something like this, but I think it also influences things after entering a company or organization. Besides academic background, there are times when seniority, in other words, in which year one has entered the company or organization, gets emphasized as well, and it often becomes one of the factors when deciding promotions or salary increases.
