English

Uh, in China, we say paoti for “sidetrack.” Now, in, if you’re doing business in China or talking with Chinese people, you’ll notice that everybody gets sidetracked sometimes. But overall it’s not very obvious, from what I’ve observed, that is, when I’ve been in China. I’ve spent a lot of time talking with Chinese employees and done some business on their behalf. Then I also [worked] with, I worked for an American company for three years. Now I’m studying in the UT-Austin business school. Now, from what I’ve observed, I don’t believe that in the Chinese cultural environment that it’s easier for people to get sidetracked. Now of course sometimes there truly are, uh, there are these kinds of cultural differences. Especially, uh, especially sometimes in communicating. For example, uh, Westerners usually ask “what,” “where,” and “will you” questions. Chinese people who are just starting [to talk to Westerners] don’t really hear what they are being asked. In these kinds of situations, people can get sidetracked. Now, in these kinds of situations, you need to, you need to be especially patient, and your… if you want ask questions in English, you must be extremely, you’ve got to speak slowly. And you must ask your questions very clearly. This will allow the person you’re speaking to, their, your Chinese partner time to [give you] feedback and tell you that they understand exactly what you’ve asked and give you an accurate response. Of course, you have to be sure to, you still have to do some, some extra communicating, some extra encouraging to make the person you’re talking to open up, so they don’t have this mental burden, so they can tell you what it truly is they’re thinking. If you do this, you’ll have better conversations and avoid getting sidetracked.
