在臺灣人的生活裏就是一般的上班族呢，其實是跟美國人一樣，就是是朝九晚五，就是早上九點開始呢到晚上五點。但是有一點很不同的就是：在臺灣的社會，就是我們傾向就是工作比較長的時間。例如可能五點下班，但是其實大家可能都工作到六七點才下班，對，那在美國這就是很不同，在美國，大家五點下班就真的五點下班，然後下班以後去做一些象休閒活動啊，去gym，或者是就是跟家人做一些就是享受生活的事情。其實臺灣人他們也是很想做這方面的事情，就說他並不是為了只是為了賺錢，然後加班，並不是這樣子的。為什麼會造成臺灣人很喜歡就是工作超時或者是加班呢？這個情況我是覺得說：第一點就是在臺灣，就是它是地地狹人稠，所以就說他活動的地方其實是比較少的。然後所以就說就說它沒有那麼多的地方讓人家，就是讓你下班以後馬上就可以去做一些休閒活動。那第二點呢來說，就說做一個事業成功的人或是工作成功的人在臺灣是被放在一個很高的社會地位上，就是說如果你不管你是男是女，就說如果你有很成功的事業的話，這就代表你這個人就是你是個成功的人，所以大家就是在追求一種不是經濟不是僅僅指是金錢，是一種地位上或者是事業上的成功。所以這就是造成為什麼在臺灣或是Chinese culture裏面，我們喜歡工作超時或加班，並不是因為真的很喜歡做這樣，而是可能是有一種就是教育或者是地位上的就是因素夾雜在裏面。

In Taiwanese people’s lives, that is, the lives most working people, they’re actually the same as Americans’, that is, nine to five, start work at nine and finish at five. But one thing that’s a little different is that in Taiwanese society, we tend to work longer hours. For example, your workday probably [officially] ends at five, but actually everybody works until six or seven. Yeah, that’s very different from America. In the US, if the workday ends at five, everybody really leaves at five. Then, after work, they do some leisure activities, go to the gym, or do something with their families to enjoy life. In fact, Taiwanese also really want to do these kinds of things, that is they aren’t…it’s not just to earn extra money. Working overtime isn’t like that. Why are Taiwanese people so inclined to work extra hours or overtime? I think it’s this: First, Taiwan is small and densely populated, so there are fewer places to do things. So, that is, that is, there aren’t so many places for people… where you can go right after work and engage in leisure-time activities. The second thing is that people who are successful in their careers, successful at work, have very high social standing in Taiwan. That is, regardless of whether you’re male or female, if you are successful in your career, it says that you, that you are a successful person. So what everybody is pursuing is not economic, not strictly financial, but a kind of social standing or career success. So this is why in Taiwan or in Chinese culture we are inclined to work extra hours or overtime. It’s not because we really like to, but probably because of something that involves factors [including] education or social standing.
