English

Chinese people’s attitudes towards the separation of their family lives and their professional lives are probably different depending on their location. In the more developed cities of the south, work pressures are increasing and competition is becoming more intense. But that doesn’t mean that people’s lives and work are all lumped together. If… except for workaholics, and CEOs and company presidents, who can’t not (they have to throw themselves into their work completely, and may spend all day thinking about questions about how to increase their company’s market share and raise profits for shareholders), but other people, like employees… even senior white-collar workers and gold-collar workers make a sharp distinction between work and life. They feel that the purpose of work is to have a better life. If a job left them with no time in which to spend the income they earned, and if it affected their health, they wouldn’t take it. So even if they [were offered] very high overtime pay, they’d prefer to have the time off. So now a lot of companies are using the offer of more time off as a benefit to motivate their employees and to attract more and better workers and to retain their current employees. But, generally speaking, people in the north might orient themselves even more around their [personal] lives. Their economic development might be lagging a little, so they don’t have as much pressure at work. So this problem of separating work and pressure doesn’t exist.
