ええ、日本のビジネス人の服装ですが、うん、これは日本人同士でも時々考える、事前に何を着て行ったらいいかというのを考えるポイントです。で、多分西洋というかアメリカとかヨーロッパの社会の方が、ドレス・コードっというのがあると思います。で、私たち、服っていうのはそもそも西洋から来たもので、日本人はずっと着物を着てたわけなんですけれども、なので、ビジネス・スーツも結局西洋の物でありますので、どちらかというとアメリカの方なりがモードというか流行、何かスタンダートとか、何ていうかな、そういうものを私たちが真似しているんではないかなというふうには思います。ただ最近は環境、エコの問題があるので、夏は「クール・ビズ」とか、冬は「ウァーム・ビズ」っということがあるというように、何となく全体が社会として、マジョリティーがこういう服を着ているっていうような情報収集をして、それに自分も合わせていると。で、購買行動っていうんですか、服を買うっというその行動も行為も、やはりメディアとかそう雑誌なんかの影響をすごい受けているので、ファッション雑誌も、だいたいビジネスではこういうモード、こういうシーンではこういう服を着るもんですよ、というようなステレオ・タイプ的なうめこみっていうかがあるので、そんなにビジネスにおいてもみなさんが違った格好をするっていうことはないと思います。今の時代はもうアメリカなりヨーロッパの方々とほぼ同じような格好をする日本人もしています。ただ何かパーティーとか特別なシチュエーションがあってどのドレス・コードなのかっていうことが心配な場合は、やはり事前に問い合わせる。マジョリティーはどういう格好をして来るのか、前回はどうだったとかっていうのを、私の場合は聞いておかしくない格好をする。また、カジュアルすぎてしまうと、例えば靴にせよ、襟があるのかないのかにせよ、それはアメリカと一緒だと思うんですけど、やっぱり主催者に対して失礼だったりとか、それっていうことをすごい考えてしまう。マジョリティーに合わせなくてはいけないという日本人の特性もすごいプラスされて、みんながだいたい同じような格好をしているというのが日本の社会だと思います。ビジネスも同じでございます。

Well, as for Japanese businessmen’s clothes…well, the point is that among Japanese people they sometimes think about it, they think about what they should wear beforehand. I think there are more dress codes in the west, or I should say in the U. S. and Europe. And this clothing originally came from the west. The Japanese had been wearing kimono all the time. Therefore business clothing is also a western thing. I kind of think that we follow such things as American style, or how should I say it, fashion trends, standards, etc. Yet recently there have been environmental, ecological problems, and we have "cool biz" in the summer and "warm biz" in the winter. Similarly, as a society as a whole, people somehow adapt themselves to the find out what the majority wears. As to purchases, how shall I say it, the way we buy clothing is influenced very much by the media and magazines. In fashion magazines, there are stereotypical ways to dress in business setting or at specific locations. So, I don't think there are times in business when people wear things that are real different. Now-a-days, Japanese dress nearly the same way as the Americans or Europeans. However, there are some parties or special situations where if one worries about the dress code you can just ask in advance. In my case, I would ask what the majority of the people would be wearing or how they had dressed previously and then I would wear something appropriate. If things become too casual, for example, with the type of shoes or whether or not you'd have a collar, then it would be disrespectable toward the organizers, as is often the case in the U. S. We think about this a lot. I think that since we're influenced by Japanese characteristics, we have to adjust to the majority. Everyone wears very similar clothing, and that is part of Japanese society. Business is the same.
